The Digital Nomad Journey
โA man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone.โ โ Henry David Thoreau
Paretoโs Law states that 20% of work activity leads to 80% of the desired results. Therefore, 80% of potential tasks produce just 20% of desired results. To drastically reduce your workweek, find, eliminate, or delegate 80% of tasks so you can focus on the vital 20%.
The 4-hour work-week will get you in the habit of asking questions While working, like: โIs this the best use of my time?โ
Does it generate income?
Am I obligated to do it?
Do I enjoy it?
If the answer to these questions is โNoโ, youโre doing an โ80%โ activity, and you need to complete the following steps (in the following order): …
“The 4-hour work-week” The Book that changed my life
But First, let me tell you how reading the book “The Four hour work week” by Tim Ferris got me started on this journey where time is the only commodity we can NOT afford to waste. We will never get it back. Every second we spend is gone forever, so how we will use this precious life-time is not something to take lightly. If we are going to make it a great life, there is not a second to waste.
I decided that working for a Bully, was not my cup of tea. I wanted to live, travel, explore the great outdoors, and go on thrilling adventures like the video shows. That was my second flight that day by the way. The first one was in the worst run down one-propeller-engined-airplane I ever sat in, and I was so happy to jump out at 6000-meters height, free-fall for 30 seconds before the para shoot opened and took me safely to the ground at least 10 minutes before the airplane returned.
Anyway, the point is that when you eliminate 80% of what you do at work and get lacer-focused on what generates results for you and your customers, you suddenly have time to live your dreams, and that is what I did.
I started using the step by step process from “the 4-hour work-week” as my way to work as smart as possible So that I could travel the world and work from anywhere. Here are the working steps in the right order:
1. Let it go
Ask yourself: Are the consequences of not doing this task reversible? continue with whatโs the worst-case scenario of NOT doing this? By asking these questions you will determine if you are spending your time doing the most important tasks.
Run small ignorance experiments: stop doing tasks with small and reversible consequences. After the experiments are complete, determine if you can live with the consequences and if you should stop doing those tasks altogether.
โCan you let the urgent โfailโโeven for a dayโto get to the next milestone for your potential life-changing tasks? Small problems will crop up, yes. A few people will complain and quickly get over it. BUT, the bigger picture items you complete will let you see these for what they areโminutiae and repairable hiccups. Make this trade a habit. Let the small bad things happen and make the big good things happen.โ โ Tim Ferriss
2. Let others Do it
Is the task you want to hand off well defined (does it have clear instructions and requirements)? Is your hourly rate higher than what it would cost someone else to do the task? these are central questions in the 4-hour work-week.
Because passing inefficient tasks to others will generate more work for you in the long run.
โEach delegated task must be both time-consuming and well-defined. If youโre running around like a chicken with its head cut off and assign your VA (virtual assistant) to do that for you, it doesnโt improve the order of the universe.โ โ Tim Ferris
The rule of thumb here is to do a task at least 5 times before handling it over to others. That will allow you to work out any issues and simplify the process before you teach someone how you want it done.
Estimate your hourly income by cutting the last three zeros off of your annual income and halving the remaining number (ex: $50,000/year = $25/hour). If you make $25/hour, you should outsource all tasks that cost less than $25/hour to complete. This allows you to generate more income by focusing on high-value tasks.
Always be thinking โHow can I teach someone to do this?โ Because that will make yourself replaceable by building checklists and FAQs and move you on to bigger and better things. When youโve fully defined the tasks you want others to do, itโs time to hire a virtual assistant (VA):

7 common tasks for your Virtual Assistant
- follow-up appointments, and travel accommodations
- Make meeting minutes (transcribe meeting audio)
- Conduct web-researches
- Complete errands and online purchasing
- Do website maintenance (web design, publishing, uploading files) & basic web design
- Proofread, format, and edit
- Write software programs
7 Rules to when you use a Virtual Assistant
- Create a competency test for desired skills (ex: for excellent English speaking skills schedule a call first).
- Have VAs rephrase the task back to you to verify their understanding of the requirements.
- Require intermediate progress updates (ex: screenshots every 4 hours).
- Make deadlines no longer than 72 hours away (24-48 hours is ideal). If the task is large, break it down into smaller tasks that can be completed within 72 hours.
- Issue one task at a time. Start small and go bigger over time. Eventually, youโll provide them prioritized task lists to complete.
- Help their decision-making process by identifying several โif-thenโ statements, general decision-making philosophies, and monetary thresholds (ex: allow VAs to use their judgment for decisions for purchase of $20 or less) to remedy potential issues.
- Never allow VAโs to use a debit card (credit card only), and create separate user accounts for VAโs with passwords that you donโt typically use
โโSomedayโ is a disease that will take your dreams to the grave with you. Pro and con lists are just as bad. If it’s important to you and you want to do it โeventually,โ just do it and correct course along the way.โ โ Tim Ferriss
The 4-hour work-week led me around the world and to SFM
After traveling for 13 months, I came back home. But after a week at home I missed the co-working community I had been a part of throughout my travels, I missed talking to likeminded people that had a purpose and meaning. People that were learning, sharing, and developing themselves every day.
I was lost… again.
After traveling around the world searching for myself and the meaning of my life; At least I knew that Learning, developing, and sharing with other passionate people that was changing lives, was what I wanted more of.
So, once again I started searching for a solution. A place to belong. Because who are we really without a tribe that we feel at home in? Did you ever have that feeling of not belonging anywhere? like you are different than the others somehow…
But then one night when I was watching Tony Robbins 6 human needs, an add caught my attention…
The guy in the ad had decided to get out of the rat race while there was still time. He had created his own online business and NOW his website was selling products for him 24/7. He had quit his job and Working from anywhere he could be with his family whenever they needed him, and best of allโฆ NO BOSSโฆ.
I decided to contact him, and he said he wanted to help me. He sent me a workshop series where his mentor explained how every person with the right mindset could create their own online businessโฆ.
I have to admit at first I was a bit skeptical, but I still decided to at least watch the videos before I made up my mind, and honestly Iโm so glad I did because this workshop series totally changed my lifeโฆ.
